As SummerSlam started, Degeneration-X (Triple H and Shawn Michaels) did one of their better segments using a “Looney Tunes” type of intro to the event.

[Rey Mysterio vs Dolph Ziggler - Intercontinental Championship]

The first match between Mysterio and Ziggler was very well done. Ziggler was not only impressive for a young talent, but showed excellent awareness for a newcomer and had Mysterio well scouted. The match is full of quick pin-falls, counters, and heart stopping action. While Rey won this match and retained his title, you couldn’t help but realize Dolph has the ability to be a major player in WWE.

[Jack Swagger vs MVP]

Both of these younger wrestlers have great potential, Swagger’s “wrestling” style can be used against so many different opponents and MVP is a great “catch as catch can” wrestler/brawler. However, the crowd showed the lackluster of this match up of social classes. MVP walked out with a nice win via Playmaker, and Swagger was left knocked out. This was more along the lines of a television match up rather than a pay-per-view event as nothing “phenomenal” at all happened.

[Chris Jericho and Big Show vs Cryme Tyme - Tag Team Championships]

Jericho starts out the match with his usual brilliant oratory, yet we hear nothing from Show due to Cryme Tyme’s ring entrance. JTG and Shad Gaspar could quite probably be the newest “Hall and Nash” , Jericho is one of the best wrestling performers in the business and Big Show is quite obviously able to devastate anyone in the ring. This SummerSlam match was well promoted, thought out, and all parties performed extremely well. Alas, Cryme Tyme could not wrest the titles from Show and Jericho.

[Kane vs The Great Khali]

After the tout of Kane beating Khali’s brother, I expected a real physical fight, and I was not let down one bit. Khali is a difficult person to wrestle due to his sheer size, but Kane would not be denied. He carried much of the match for the giant and ended the match in his own typical style, by grabbing Khali’s brother as a distraction and DDTed Khali paving his way to victory.

[D-Generation X vs Legacy]

This almost became the SummerSlam main event match, again featuring younger wrestlers against the established. DX stole the entrance of the night award with GI’s, jeeps, and a ride to the ring on top of a tank. What else would you expect from Triple H and Shawn Michaels? Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes were completely impressive against these two veterans and were no walk in the park for Triple H or Shawn Michaels. Legacy worked as a well oiled machine to give DX an excellent match that ended with Sweet Chin Music on Rhodes.

[Christian vs William Regal - ECW Championship]

This match lasted eight, yes eight, seconds. Christian won as Regal was too preoccupied with talking trash to remember to remove his robe allowing Christian to pull it over his head. Ezekiel Jackson and Vladimir Koslov then entered the ring and the trio beat down Christian and left the ring. Very… un-wrestling-like-conduct.

[John Cena vs Randy Orton - WWE Championship]

Neither of these performers are what I would consider main event “wrestlers”, so my expectations were not very high to begin with. This performance had all the fan pops and perks we’ve come to expect from these two. What did make this match interesting was that Orton lost by intentional disqualification and count out, then he used the ropes to win the match, but the match was restarted once again and a fan ran into the ring attacking Cena, as the match was again restarted after the fan was pulled out by security, Orton RKO’ed Cena twice and retained his title in an uncharacteristic legit win. I actually found myself liking this match toward the end as it was so unpredictable.Har

[Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk (Tables, Laidders, and Chairs) - WWE World Heavyweight Championship]

The rivalry between Punk and Hardy culminated to this match up that featured both wrestlers taking major risks and major falls. This match is nothing short of brutal in nature and both Hardy and Punk took the entire match to the extreme. Punk started out utilizing a chair and almost pulled a quick upset victory right away, but Jeff Hardy pushed the ladder over at the last second. That’s when things got interesting and all stops were pulled. The tables, ladders, and chairs were FULLY utilized in this competition and both competitors took some of the most extreme shots I’ve seen in any wrestling match. CM Punk pulled off the win to become the new WWE Heavyweight Champion Of The World. As the event closed, CM Punk stood over Jeff Hardy, victorious as the lights went out. When they came back on, Undertaker had taken Hardy’s spot underneath Punk and choke slammed the new champion.

SummerSlam ended with a resounding cheer from the audience as Undertaker left a devastated CM Punk lying in the ring.

- Jeff Hardy won the World Heavyweight Championship from CM Punk in an incredible match that will go down in history. Jeff Hardy also became the very first WWE trending topic on twitter. Not only did he make the trending topic list, but hit #1 for about an hour and remained a trending topic for approximately 8 hours.

- Randy Orton wound up retaining the WWE Championship title after RKOing Cena. The strange part is he tapped out during the match. This should be an interesting twist.

- Rey Mysterio retained his Intercontinental Championship defeating Dolph Ziggler. Ziggler made a decent showing for a newbie.

- Kofi Kingston retained the US Championship defeating Carlito, Jack Swagger, MVP, The Miz, and Primo (who stood in for Big Show).

- Big Show became Chris Jericho’s partner making them the Unified Tag Team Champions by besting Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr.

- Christian popped Tommy Dreamer to win the ECW Championship.

- Michelle McCool beat Melina in a very clean match retaining the WWE Women’s Championship.

- Mickie James squashed Maryse to become the Divas Champion.

- Rumors are wild and the drama runs deep. Sources inside the WWE are reporting that Vince McMahon is really upset that two matches did not go as planned during the pay-per-view. Rey Mysterio was supposed to drop the title to Dolph Ziggler and the Jericho-Big Show unification was not supposed to happen. Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. were supposed to take the tag titles. We’ll see what happens on RAW tonight.
