Eve Torres was the 2007 World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Diva Search winner. Eve swore to the WWE Universe that she would do her best to become a serious competitor in the organization and has done ‘exactly’ that. Torres has martial arts, wrestling, and gymnastic abilities and has successfully combined them into a smooth, yet wicked, wrestling style.

Diva Search Winner For 2007

Eve entered the yearly Diva Search during the summer of 2007 and was chosen as one of the eight finalist to compete for a prize of $250,000 and a one year contract with World Wrestling Entertainment. On October 29th, she was crowned the 2007 Diva Search winner defeating several talented and beautiful women. By January 4th, 2008, she had received her wrestling license and started her training in Ohio Valley Wrestling.

Friday Night SmackDown

On January 11th, shortly after her training in OVW started, WWE began airing promos of Eve for the next three weeks until she made her official debut for the company on Febuary 1rst, 2008. She began backstage on Smackdown as an interviewer for the superstars. By springtime Eve was used a participant in a contest to determine the top Diva on Smackdown and also appeared at Wrestlemania 24 as a lumberjill in the Bunny Mania match that featured Maria Kanellis and Ashley Massaro against Melina Perez and Beth Phoenix. While Eve was not yet ready to hit the ring in singles competition, she took every advantage to get air time including participating in the 2008 Halloween contest dressed as Raphael the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle while training. On November 3, 2008, the 800th episode of Raw, Eve participated in a 16-Diva tag team match, in which her team lost although she was never tagged.

On January 2nd, 2009, Torres was attacked backstage during an interview by Michelle McCool, which in turn, pushed her into the ring on February 6th to face McCool. Torres was completely out wrestled by the semi-veteran McCool and wound up submitting the match. Torres wasn’t ready with her training to compete in a match like this and it showed. Her next aired wrestling match did not occur until April 5th, where she was used as one of the twenty five divas to appear in the “Miss Wrestlemania” contest at Wrestlemania 25. This led into a storyline with 2006 Diva Search winner Layla El who began competing with Torres in everything from dance to arm wrestling contests. They finally entered the ring to wrestle on May 29th, where Eve showed her superiority over Layla and defeated her. However, Eve and Layla’s rivalry was far from over and on June 18th, they squared off once again on WWE Superstars showing Eve pinning Layla once again. After the match, both women shook hands and ended the match respectfully.

Eve Torres joins Cryme Tyme

While Layla and Torres were feuding, Eve started hanging with Shad Gaspar and JTG of Cryme Tyme. Their association led to many entertaining backstage segments on JTG and Gaspar’s “Word Up” mini show. Eve began accompanying Cryme Tyme to the ring as their manager during their feuds with The Hart Dynasty which led to a inter-gender tag team featuring all six wrestlers. During this time, Torres really stepped up her game and while she was not always victorious, she was showing a raw wrestling talent. Her meddle was tested the following week on Smackdown as she faced Natalya Neidhart in singles competition and won a stunning hard fought victory. September 3rd, Eve Torres teamed with Cryme Tyme against The Hart Dynasty in a six-person inter-gender tag team match that ended in Eve’s defeat at the hands of Natalya Neidhart, however, this was one of  Eve’s best matches to date, adding at least three new and exciting moves to her arsenal.

Eve Torres Wrestling Performances

In Torres’ third televised Smackdown match she was scheduled in an exhibition-non-title bout with, then, Divas Champion Maryse. If you have seen Ms Ouellette try to wrestle, you can easily see how difficult it is for better performers to have a good match with her. However, Torres, fresh out of training, pulls it off wonderfully; not only showing her skills and determination, but also putting Maryse over without making herself look weak. This match eventually erupts allowing Michelle McCool and Melina Perez to steal Maryse’s thunder.

Cryme Tyme (with Torres) faced off against The Hart Dynasty (with Natalya Neidhart)  in tag team competition on a regular basis. Eventually, the outside interferences of these two female managers spilled into the ring and the two squared off in the ring. Neidhart might as well be a veteran with all the MMA and wrestling training she’s had. But Torres really showed “true grit” and, not only hung in, but won this match with unique and surprising counters, followed up by a killer finisher. In reviewing this bout, I think Natalya took Eve lightly and in the end, bought herself one in the loss column.
