In July of 2007, the young DiBiase began his professional wrestling career by signing a development deal in the Florida Championship Wrestling circuit. He debuted in FCW on August 4th winning his first match, via tag team, and by October became a member of the “Next Generation Hart Foundation” that included wrestlers TJ Wilson, Nattie Neidhart, Teddy Hart, and Harry Smith. Later that year, on December 18th, he won the FCW Southern Heavyweight Championship which he was unable to defend due to an injury. In January, he gave up the title to his tag team partner and by March could only wrestle sporadically due due to a multitude of injuries.
Ted DiBiase joins World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)
On the May 26th 2008 airing of Raw, “The Million Dollar Man” introduced his son to, the WWE Tag Team Champions, Cody Rhodes and Harcore Holly. He stated that Rhodes and Holly’s days were numbered as WWE Tag Team Champions. He challenged the two at the Night Of Champions claiming to have a partner that would be announced at the event. When the event started, he announced his partner would be late and he would wrestle a two on one handicapped match until his partner showed. DiBiase demanded Holly start the match, however, once Holly entered the ring, his partner attacked him while DiBiase used a microphone to introduce his new partner, Cody Rhodes. Then he placed Holly in the hold his father made famous, the Million Dollar Dream. DiBiase pinned Holly and in his first match ever in the WWE, won one half of the Tag Team Championships.
Ted DiBiase Jr & Cody Rhodes
DiBiase and Rhodes successfully defended their championships until August 4th, losing them to Batista and John Cena, only to win them back the following week in a re-match. A few weeks later, Manu joined the two and helped them retain the titles by providing assistance when needed. Finally, in October, DiBiase and Rhodes lost their championships to CM Punk and Kofi Kingston. Randy Orton confronted DiBiase and Rhodes after the match calling them weak, and continued berating the two on a weekly basis. On the October 27h 2008 episode of Raw, Dibiase was viciously attacked by Randy, after interfering in his match, and punted in the head which sidelined him for approximately two months.
Ted DiBiase Jr with Legacy
Upon returning to the WWE, on January 12th 2009, DiBiase was to team up with Manu and Sim Snuka to get revenge on Orton. After a grueling match with Kane, Orton with Rhodes in tow, found themselves surrounded by the trio and as the fighting ensued DiBiase attacked Manu and Snuka joining Orton and Rhodes to form the group called “Legacy”. In a storyline twist Legacy, lead by Orton, attacked the McMahons several times, finally bringing Triple H into the fray, sledgehammer and all. DiBiase and Rhodes began clearing a path for Orton to wrest the WWE Championship from Triple H, taking every opportunity to help him win his matches. On April 26th at Backlash, Legacy won a strange six man tag team match which featured leader of Legacy Randy Orton, DiBiase, and Rhodes, pitted against leader Triple H, Batista, and Shane McMahon. DiBiase and Rhodes assisted Orton to wrest the WWE Championship from Triple H and the fight continues between the two. It has become obvious that Legacy’s plan is to take all the gold while taking out anyone in their paths. On June 8th during Raw, Legacy viciously attacked Batista with chairs before his Championship Title defense with Orton severely injuring his arm. Later, Legacy showed in the ring claiming the belt if Batista didn’t show. Unfortunately for them, Triple H DID show… with sledgehammer in tow chasing them out of the ring. The week following, DiBiase and Rhodes, made the final four in 10 Man Over The Top Battle Royal to decide Orton’s opponent at The Great American Bash. Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes continued their lackey role as Orton’s enforcers attacking anyone (mostly Triple H) who stood in Orton’s way. By the time Night Of Champions rolled around, DiBiase and Rhodes where sent to do battle with Chris Jericho and a mystery partner for the Unified Tag Team Championships. Unfortunately for them, Jericho’s partner turned out to be The Big Show and the enforcers of Legacy were beaten. The Legacy duo made a statement on August 10th by dominating Triple H in a handicapped two on one match. After which Triple H reformed DX with Michaels the following week. During the promo, as Hunter asked “Are you ready”, DiBiase and Rhodes attacked the re-united duo and Ted DiBiase Jr answered the resounding call with a definitive “yes”. This led to SummerSlam where the re-united DX beat Legacy with sweet chin music followed by a pedigree.
Ted DiBiase Jr is young and has some incredibly big shoes to fill. His father was not only a great “in-ring” wrestler, but an extremely famous professional wrestling “personality”. Ted’s in-ring skills, while still better than “mentor” Randy Orton’s, are fairly limited; applying many overly-long, boring, and predictable holds. His on-screen personality could be described in the same way. Right now, Legacy is the best thing for DiBiase’s career because Orton can give him “personality” and Rhodes can teach him newer wrestling moves. He IS still young, maybe he will surprise me and wind up being as good a pro wrestler and entertainer as his father.
